Second, a big thank you to all of our family and friends for their prayers, cards, phone calls and messages, gifts, and warm wishes. Your love and care for us has been overwhelming and much appreciated. This blog is being used as hopefully a more timely method of communicating updates to all of our friends and family about Marjie's progress as we navigate through this challenging journey.
In early February, 2015, Marjie was diagnosed as having a brain tumor. After a preliminary visit with doctors at the Huntsman Cancer Hospital, surgery was scheduled. The surgery occurred on February 13th. The surgeon was able to remove the majority, but not all of the tumor. Unfortunately, pathology results showed the mass to be an aggressive, malignant tumor. Because of this, Marjie will need additional treatments including radiation and chemotherapy. We will therefore be in Utah for an extended period. We feel very thankful that Becky and her family are close by in Murray, Utah.
Due to the difficult location of the tumor, Marjie experienced significant side effects from the surgery.
She suffered paralysis on her left side. We have moved from the Huntsman Cancer Hospital to the University of Utah Rehabilitation Inpatient Unit. Scott is able to stay in the room with Marjie, which we are extremely thankful for. A typical day for us is 45 minutes of cognitive therapy, two 45 minute sessions of occupational therapy (focusing primarily on the left hand, arm, and shoulder) and two 45 minute sessions of physical therapy (focusing primarily on the left leg and hip). In addition, Marjie asks for additional therapy when possible, and the physical therapists have been more than happy to work in extra sessions for her. We also are practicing what we learn in our room in the evenings. Marjie has been working extremely hard and is showing good progress. She has regained significant strength in her left leg, and balance has improved a lot in the last week. She is working hard to improve motor control with the goal of walking without assistance. We are very pleased and
impressed with all of the therapists we have worked with.
In addition to Marjie's progress in therapy, one of the highlights of the past week was several visits from the grandkids (plus Becky and Matthew, and daughter-in-law Joan and her mother, Julia).
We have decided that grandkids are the best therapy of all. Thanks Claire, Lucas, and Caleb!
Comment from Marjie (despite objections from Scott): Much of my progress is due to the efforts of my private nurse, Scott. He dresses me (he calls the sports bra "the beast" and just can't quite figure it out). He helps me go to the restroom, shower, and with all of the things I used to take for granted. It is much more comfortable getting personal care from my husband than from a nurse I just met-no matter how caring they might be.
Future updates will be more in "bullet point" format providing information on progress. We apologize that this one got a bit wordy-almost felt like a therapy session in itself.
We will close this first posting by sharing a recent photo of Marjie with the grandkids.
Mrs. Atkins, you look so happy with your grandkids, and it's obvious that they love you very much! Keep your optimistic attitude alive! I pray for you multiple times each day, and I know that you can beat this. Sending hugs! Love, Amber
ReplyDeleteYou are in out thoughts and prayers each day (along with Scott, the kids and grandkids). We love hearing the therapy stories where the PT's and OT's end up more worn out than you it seems with your tenacity and refusal to settle for just what's expected! You are such an inspiration with your tenacity, smile, and mental toughness! With much love, The Marcellus 4

ReplyDeleteI will be filling in at running club and where ever else they can use me while your away. At running club this week I could hardly keep up with Brinlee, she is getting so fast. Thanks for the great influence you have had in our lives. Can't wait to have you back.

Marjie,
ReplyDeleteYou truly are amazing! I've watched your strength in so many areas over the past twenty-plus years. I continue to be in awe of your fortitude with everything you take on. This cancer business is apparently no different. It is no surprise to me that you are wearing out your therapists--you've worn me out for years just watching you work. Scott, bless you! Your compassion and support is obviously an integral part of your relationship. Thanks for setting up this blog, so we can all continue to lift you up in our thoughts and prayers. (By the way, Marjie, you look FABULOUS and those darling grandchildren are just too cute!)
Dear Marjie & Scott,
ReplyDeleteWe sent an email someplace yesterday, but obviously not to this site ! We are so grateful for this new website being set up so that we can get news as to all you are doing ! Please know that we are keeping you all in prayer, and we know that the staff at Huntsman and U. of U. are good, but that they likely have never had a patient as full of perseverance , persistence and positive performance as our Margie! Keep up the good work, and know that your cheering squad here is with you ! Much love, Ray & Shirley
Hi Marjie,
ReplyDeleteHope you are having a good day! Just got back from jogging/walking a 5K with Gris. We dedicated this run in honor of you and thought of you every step of the way! We want to keep cheering you on with your therapy and treatment to come. You and the family will continue to be in our prayers daily. Sending lots of love and encouragement your way!

Hola Marjie, we´re very glad of your progress and thinking of you every day. This weekend we´ll go the the place where Mariana an Jackie got married to celebrate their fifth anniversary. So we will be toasting to your recovery and thinking how much all of us love you ! Un abrazo. Jose
ReplyDeleteDear Marj--So impressed by your progress with the chemo & radiotherapy, and I'll be on the lookout for this week's update. Hoping you all are having a blowout time at Becky's 30th--I find it hard to realize that there are still adults so young! I think of you multiple times a day but last weekend even more as we had the occasion to celebrate Jackie & Mariana's 5th wedding anniversary at the estate in HBG where the wedding was held & where we were so honored that you & Steve took the loving time to join us. Wishing you a productive next week, but how could it not be, with your tenacity & such a competent male nurse! Love you so very much, ~Carol
